MAURICE GAINEN

7 CONTINENTS – Global Jams(Empyrean)

Representing music from around the world through his travels and at-home studio sessions, flutist Maurice Gainen has created a superb meeting-of-the-minds global jam.  By enlisting the performance of musicians from both afar and at home, he’s able to mix world music and jazz in an improvised setting.  Gainen plays flute and saxophone alongside instruments and singers who lend exotic sounds; different tracks feature didgeridoo, Spanish guitar, tabla, shenai, mrdangam, ghattam, Thai gong chimes, Balinese flute and more.

Home for Gainen is Los Angeles; however, his music reaches far and wide.  The album even includes a Douglas Quin recording of natural Antarctic sounds mixed with Gainen’s flute melodies.  While his travels include musicians and music from all over, the flutist seeks and finds a common bond.  Language and culture may differ greatly from one nation to the next, but most groups agree on what makes good music when it comes to the mainstream.

Gainen’s songs float along natural pathways while incorporating rhythmic action; he makes you want to dance.  Astor Piazzolla’s “Adios Nonino” represents Argentina, while Alotle Dasgupta’s “Brahana” provides echoes of southern India.  Karoline Blandin’s French reading of her “Summer in Winter” issues clear and romantic.  The flute, drum and human voice, after all, represent some of the earliest forms of music.  By tying so many different cultures together on this graceful album. Flutist Gainen has created a universal tool.
